When you think of must have tools for the wood shop, the drill press may not immediately come to mind. In fact, many people believe that if they have a regular power drill they will have no use for a drill press. That could not be further from the truth. A drill press is a very handy tool to have for the more advanced wood worker, or even the hobbyist who wants a good quality, versatile tool in their shop.

I was looking to define what woodwork is. Yes I've been doing it for years but to me it is a hobby and now a business. But I do have many friends to whom it is a trade. A trade is different from a business, for a trade requires your constant participation. Your generally self employed, employed o a contractor where you trade your time for money and therefore must go to work each day to make a wage. A business is different as a business is a method of getting work done that multiplies your time, uses it more effectively or leverages your time...

But I digress, so I'll talk more about business in another post. But today I'm looking to define that woodworking is. I found some enlightening words on the subject from Byron Branfield and I think it deserves a read....

Every business, needs to have a plan or a mission to succeed. But before a plan or mission can be developed there are questions you need to answer.

As a woodworker and owner of a Woodcraft Business you need to decide what are the core values and competencies of your Business.  Your business values  and compentencie will determine what your business produces, how it produces it and how it deals with its customers, agents and the outside world.

The following article by Byron Branfield touches in some of the issue but I will elaborate in later post.
