Turning your woodworking hobby into a profitable business has to be done step-by-step.  After you have solved the legal documents related to your brand new woodworking business, the next step is to make an inventory of the tools and supplies you already have and the ones you will have to purchase.  Now it's the moment to decide what you priorities are which are and the items you do not need immediately.    Most of the woodworkers who have practiced woodworking as a hobby before they decided turning it into a business usually have some of the necessary tools, and most men have such tools around the house.  Those are the hand tools.

The claw hammer is one of the most used tools, and we recommend that you buy one with a smooth, slightly rounded finish head.  A retractable tape measure with a fixing mechanism is the best tool for you to measure the right length of the stock you need to cut.  The 6" speed square helps you mark pretty fast a square line of the end cut and the level is used to fix the stock perfectly horizontal or vertical.  You can always find a use for the utility knife such as making a mark on the stock.  Chisels are the best in cleaning the joints from the remains of wood, and different sizes are suitable for different types of blades. Other hand tools included on your inventory are screwdrivers, nail sets or a block plane.

Many beginner woodworkers think that they have to buy a bunch of power tools to get started.  The true is that woodworking requires just a few quality power tools that can help you accomplish a considerable number of projects.  The power drills can be corded or cordless.  The convenient choice is the cordless drill, which has variable speed and versatility and many drilling tasks.  The jigsaw can help you cut circular patterns in the stock, especially the ones with orbital action and different types of blades.  The table saw is a lasting investment of your budget, and it is a tool for the experienced woodworkers.  That is why you should buy the best you find, because it is a tool that you will use many years from now; check before the features of the table saw that can help you best in creating the wood products you choose to sell.

The router can have two different bases: a plunge router base and a stationary one.  You can use the stationary router with a variable speed on a router table and it will be more stable and comfortable to work with.  You can also add to your tool collection a Compound Mitter Saw or a Circular Saw.  For sanding the stock, the random orbital sander is better than a palm sander, because of the random motion on the stock.  Buy a small supply of sanding disks too, suitable for the model of random orbital sander you have chosen.

After you have completed the inventory of indispensable tools necessary for your woodworking activity, if you have some extra cash, you can buy the nice-to-have items for your woodworking business.  A computer can be very useful in organizing your activity, with listing your clients, your orders and printing the flyers, brochures or business cards you can use to advertise your business.  You can use a digital camera to make photos of your products that you can use for the Internet website or on EBay to sell your products.  It would be nice to have tags for your wood products, with your businesses' name and loge, boxes or packaging items, display equipment for the trade shows you will attend to.

You can always find something to buy for your business to work better, and, in time, you can use a part of the profit to update or repair your tools and additional items.
