Track saws?
I'm pretty new and after most of the first semester at the local community, I'm finally ready to buy some of my own tools (starting from nothing). Given the constraints of money and space, I'm going to be working outside and need a portable substitute for a tablesaw to do rip cuts on lumber and sheet products. I'm pretty new and get freaked

Heat bending of wood
Does anyone have any experience using heat alone to soften wood to take a bend? I know the method of choice is usually steam bending, but I heard tell that heat alone can also soften at least some woods enough to take at least a gentle curvature. Any comments?

What ideas do you have to help me with this glue up?
I am making a table top from 1/2" stock. There is a center rectangle about 11" x 13" made of baltic birch with a veneer on it. There are 4 mitered pieces of mahogany that are 2 1/2" wide that surround the rectangle. I will have biscuits to hold the pieces together. The problem I am trying to solve

Purpose of leather shock washers
I recently finished removing (4) 1/2" layers of fir from a pair of glulam beams (for my workbench, but that's another story). I did this by making lots of 1/2" deep saw cuts across the beam faces, then using some bench chisels to waste away the majority of the wood. Lots of pounding involved. My query revolves around the durability, or lack thereof, of the leather
